December News & Highlights
Dear Cville Schools community–
As we head into the holidays, I want to share with you a story that sparks pride and gratitude for the good work that my colleagues --and our students! -- do every day.
CBS19 recently told the story of Olga Salama, one of four winners of the Elizabeth and Greg Allen Opportunity Scholarship.
I invite you to watch Olga's inspirational story -- but as you do so, keep in mind that the other Allen scholarship winners -- Antony and Ciaijah and Kevohn -- could just as easily have been featured and are just as inspiring. In fact, our news stations could come to CHS, or Buford, or any other school every day and find the same transformational work happening in our classrooms.
Wishing you and yours a happy holiday season filled with gifts like gratitude, inspiration, and growth.
Dr. G

Important Cville Schools Updates
Thanks for your continued engagement as we continue to plan for the rezoning of our elementary schools.
The next steps of the rezoning process are:
-
Early January: Community advisory committee meets to discuss feedback and recommend a proposal to move forward. The final recommendation may pull elements from the various 4 maps under consideration.
-
Mid-January: The recommendation will be shared with the community. This recommendation will include some information about phasing (by grade level cohorts and/or neighborhoods, or perhaps tied to the impacting housing development). Phasing plans would likely be updated each year in December based on the latest status for various residential construction projects.
-
January 22, 5-7pm at Jackson-Via media center: Meeting to hear public feedback on recommendation. We will also promote other ways to share your feedback.
-
February 6, 5pm: Zoning is scheduled to be on the Board agenda for discussion (and further public comment). From there, the Board may request further refinement or decide to vote on the recommendation in March.

School Name Review Recommendations
At the 12/5 School Board meeting, the Board received the four school committees’ recommendations, all of which were endorsed by Dr. Gurley. The recommendations are that Burnley-Moran be renamed Sunrise Elementary School; that Johnson be renamed Tall Oaks Elementary School; and that Greenbrier and Jackson-Via retain their current names. If approved in January, the two new names would go into effect in August 2025. Watch the presentation here.

Health Care Education: Student Spotlight and Upcoming Classes
Senior Saadia Hamilton was recently featured in the “Profile of a CATEC Student” series. A nurse assistant student, she works at ACAC Kid Zone and plans to be a pediatric nurse (with 5 college acceptances so far).
Speaking of educating future medical professionals, did you know that in the draft Program of Study for next year, CHS is planning to offer Health & Medical Sciences? And in 2026-27, CATEC is planning to add Practical Nursing? This class would bolster students’ skills and certifications and also create a pathway for students to waive RN program prerequisites at community colleges.

Chris Long Foundation Supports Cville Schools
- Thank you to Chris Long and Joe Reed for leading storytime at Johnson Elementary last week! The NFL players read to students and then announced a donation of 1,300 books to the school. We appreciate their support of books as an essential need for our students.
- The Chris Long Foundation also supports “EdZone” closets at each of our elementary schools, offering home essentials from toothpaste to menstrual supplies. As winter break approaches, if your family – at any of our schools – needs assistance with food or other essentials, please let a trusted adult at your school know!
- Two Cville Schools students were winners in the City's "Imagine a Day without Water" art competition. Nadia Salazar Fraire was the 7th-8th grade winner (see her entry at left), and Johnson 1st grader Ezra Bahr won for "Best Photography."
- Buford and CHS led area schools in the number of students selected for All-District Band. At Buford, 13 students were selected, and at CHS, the number was 40, with 9 of those students earning a coveted all-state audition. Find a complete list of names here! (And come see these musicians in concert tonight at 7pm at the MLK Performing Arts Center!)
- Cross-school collaborations benefit everyone! Second-graders across the city traveled to watch Buford students perform ELF the Musical. Greenbrier 3rd-graders were shown the ropes by CHS theatre students today. And CHS students in Public Speaking II are going to every elementary school's 2nd grade classes to do storytelling workshops.
