For the first time this year, CHS athletes welcomed every Charlottesville City Schools 3rd and 4th grader to the high school to help them see themselves as future players on Black Knight sports teams. Throughout the winter, kids from every elementary school in Charlottesville got to participate in mini-clinics in football, basketball, lacrosse, and baseball/softball. Elementary students get to try a new sport, meet some “big kids,” and get a dose of Black Knight pride.

Black Knight Sports Days were organized by the C-will Fund, an organization founded in memory of Buford student-athlete Calvin Ness, who died in 2023. Calvin’s friends are now CHS students themselves, and many of them lead the clinics.

“We aim to bring the community together around Charlottesville City Schools sports,” CHS senior Andrew Cullinan told NBC29. “We’re really trying to look at the city schools and see how we can help on behalf of Calvin.”

Calvin’s mother, Dr. Elizabeth Korab, who is the principal of Burnley-Moran Elementary, noted:  “I have been so proud and impressed with how these students are showing their care and love of Calvin through action. It’s been a beautiful collaboration between elementary and high school students.”

This spring, CHS student athletes plan to visit 3rd and 4th graders during their lunch block as a follow-up.

“The C-will Fund hopes this continues to build Black Knight community through sports, something Calvin loved,” Korab said.
