This Week's Note

Dear Families,

This week's note includes a new section with celebrations and highlights about our Knight Life, a note on deadlines or important planning information, an overview of our schedule, and information from the PTO.

CHS completed our first week of school and are continuing to refine our daily routines and reaffirm expectations. Please continue to prioritize helping your student with daily on-time arrival to school and to class.

For concerns or issues related to transportation you can contact Betsy Scott via ParentSquare message or at 434 245 2672.

Student schedules are expected to be finalized this week. Your student should work with their counselor to make sure their schedule is set.

CHS students who drive and park at CHS will need to get their decals. Information about this process is in this ParentSquare link.

I love the Knight Life!

CHS Film in Light House Film Festival

Light House Studio’s 24th Annual Youth Film Festival will feature "Accessibility Ramp," a film created by CHS student Alex Duenes ’25. The film was created in collaboration with Light House studio about how the CHS Farming program built an accessibility ramp out to its garden and chicken coop so that all students could learn there. Come see the film on Sunday, September 7 at the Paramount Theater at 6:30pm. More information about the Film Festival

CMS

Come tour Charlottesville Middle School

This August, our division proudly opened the doors to the new academic building of Charlottesville Middle School, serving 7th and 8th grade now (and welcoming 6th grade in 2026 once a major renovation of the old Buford buildings is complete). Many of our Black Knight students and families helped make this project a reality, from advocating for funding to giving feedback about what our students need from a modern middle school. Come and see the amazing results! Principal Rodney Jordan and VMDO architects are leading tours this fall. Sign up for a tour of CMS here.
SEL

SEL Time: Overview

SEL Time
CHS continues to make social-emotional learning a priority because it is essential to building and sustaining a safe, supportive school environment. SEL equips all students—not just those in crisis—with practical, evidence-based skills to manage emotions, handle stress, make thoughtful decisions, and build positive relationships. By embedding these lessons into the school day, we proactively support mental health, improve behavior, and create a shared language for problem-solving across our school. This work strengthens engagement, enriches student experiences, and supports excellence, helping every Black Knight thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

SEL Time is linked to each student’s 4th period class.
Impact

Impact Time: Overview

Impact Time
Impact Time (formerly BKT) is dedicated time in each student’s schedule for targeted academic support. During Impact Time, students may:
  • Re-learn or practice a skill
  • Retake an assignment or assessment
  • Conference with their teacher
  • Work independently
Impact Time is tied to a specific period in a student’s schedule, and students are expected to attend daily just like any other class.

CHS Time
CHS Time - also with your 4th period class - is on the schedule as a placeholder for CHS school-specific events (pep rallies, assemblies).
During the year, this time may also be used for students to get additional support or for teacher check-in. We will directly communicate to staff and students when CHS time will occur.
CHS PSC

Positive School Culture (PSC) Updates

CHS's commitment to a Positive School Culture includes professional learning and development with promoting positive school behaviors and aligning positive school strategies.

This section will be devoted to updating our community on ideas, references, or strategies that our school-based PSC team is helping promote.

You will see CHS: Community - Striving - Honesty on email signatures, ParentSquare messages, and in other communication. This represents key values thar our school is promoting as meaningful traits of personal and school success.

CHS PTO

PTO Information

This section is allocated to PTO updates.

CHS has an active PTO which helps support our students and teachers and staff. Shortly our President, Ashley Howard, will be reaching out to our community to invite new and returning families to learn more about our work. In advance of that invitation I wanted to put out a need that PTO will have this year. Specifically we need to fill the roles of Secretary and Treasurer. If you believe you might be interested in either role please reach out by responding to this message.

We have a number of other committees where participation is also welcome (teacher grants, student support, teacher and staff appreciation). Please stay tuned for an announcement regarding our first meeting, where families and staff can learn more about what is in tap for the year and how you might get involved at the level that works for you.

PTO Meetings: 2nd Monday of each Month at CHS and via Zoom.

Next Meeting: Monday, September 8th, 2025.
