This Week's Note

Dear Families,

This week's note includes the ongoing CHS Celebrations feature of my newsletter along with an update on our upcoming PTO meeting (9/8/25).

First, I want to thank our community - students, staff, and families - for the strong start to our school year. We launched with clear routines, focused instruction, and a shared commitment to Engagement, Experiences, and Excellence. We are grateful for the coordinated efforts of transportation, nutrition, facilities, and student services staff, as well as the continued support of our PTO and community organizations. Together, we’re building the momentum our students deserve.

Included in today's newsletter are some reminders that will continue to help us be successful in this work.

Thanks for believing in our kids and each other. Let’s make this our clarion call year—Engagement, Experiences, Excellence in action.

I love the Knight Life!

CHS Celebrations

I Love the Knight Life!

Band

Marching Black Knights at Home Depot Grand Opening

The Marching Knights were invited to perform at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Home Depot. A 45 member pep band went out to perform for over 100 associates and their families, a boy scout troop for the flag raising and the Fire Department. The band performed some of our favorite stands tunes and even an excerpt from this year’s marching show. The weather was perfect and the band performance was fantastic.

Lighthouse

CHS Film in Light House Film Festival

Light House Studio’s 24th Annual Youth Film Festival will feature "Accessibility Ramp," a film created by CHS student Alex Duenes ’25. The film was created in collaboration with Light House studio about how the CHS Farming program built an accessibility ramp out to its garden and chicken coop so that all students could learn there. Come see the film on Sunday, September 7 at the Paramount Theater at 6:30pm. More information about the Film Festival

CMS

Come tour Charlottesville Middle School

This August, our division proudly opened the doors to the new academic building of Charlottesville Middle School, serving 7th and 8th grade now (and welcoming 6th grade in 2026 once a major renovation of the old Buford buildings is complete). Many of our Black Knight students and families helped make this project a reality, from advocating for funding to giving feedback about what our students need from a modern middle school. Come and see the amazing results! Principal Rodney Jordan and VMDO architects are leading tours this fall. Sign up for a tour of CMS here.

Safe Routines

Please review the following routines and call the school with any questions;

Off & Away
Our "Off and Away" device expectations have made a noticeable difference in both our schoolwide environment and classroom communities. In classrooms especially, we've seen improvements in student discussions, interpersonal connections, and overall engagement.

Student personal devices must be Off and Away during the school day: 9am - 4pm. Confiscated phones are turned into the main office.
Confiscated phones may only be picked up by an approved family member and will not be provided back to students.

Attendance
CHS promotes the value of daily and on-time arrival for school and classes as a significant indicator of student success.
Please help your student with their on-time arrival.
Families can contact Tabitha Gore - our Attendance Technician - for all absence updates including responding to any attendance notifications.
You can communicate with Ms. Gore by:

  • Calling 434 245 2410
  • Email at goret2@charlottesvilleschools.org
  • Provide or drop-off a note to the front attendance desk
  • ParentSquare message Tabitha Gore

Transportation
If you are still having concerns with getting your student bus transportation, please contact Betsy Scott for assistance.

  • Call to 434 245 2672
  • Email to mawyere1@charlottesvilleschools.org
  • ParentSquare message Betsy Scott

After-school Buy-Back or Lunch Detention
Student on-time arrival to class is critical for student success and class community development.
Student tardiness will be monitored on a daily basis.
Students who are excessively tardy (either by the frequency of tardiness or by the number of minutes) may be assigned After-school Buy Back from 4:00pm - 5pm or lunch detention.
CHS admin or staff will contact families whose students are assigned either Buy-Back of lunch detention.
Students who stay after school can either be picked-up or use the 5pm Activity Bus. Of course, approved students may also self-transport.

CHS PTO

PTO Information

This section is allocated to PTO updates.

CHS has an active PTO which helps support our students and teachers and staff.

The PTO is here to build strong partnerships between families, teachers, and administrators, and we are proud to play a role in helping our school thrive. Whether it's supporting classroom needs through teacher grants, organizing breakfasts and teacher appreciation, or fostering communication between staff and families, our goal is to help create a positive and enriching environment for every student.

We invite all families to get involved in a way that’s comfortable for your family. That may be volunteering, attending our monthly meetings, “liking” our posts, or anything in between.

PTO Meetings: 2nd Monday of each Month at CHS and via Zoom.

Next Meeting: Monday, September 8th, 2025.
