Dear Families,
This week's note includes the ongoing CHS Celebrations feature of my newsletter along with an update on our upcoming PTO meeting (9/8/25) as well as opportunities for students to engage on the topic of SROs returning to Charlottesville City Schools.
Earlier today, I shared an update about ways students can engage with school division and CPD staff to learn more about the SROs return to school and to share their thoughts on this decision. Details about when and how are also included below.
Also noted below is the return of our Late Knight News - a video feature from our student-led Knight Time Review newspaper. It's sharp, focused, and, despite the call to stay nonchalant, high energy.
We have a full week ahead of engagement -experiences - excellence so let's all do our part to give our best and expect our best.
I love the Knight Life!

In March, the School Board voted to add Charlottesville Police Department officers to our school’s safety plan. Starting next August, two “school resource officers” (SROs) will be at CHS to handle police-related tasks like emergencies, safety planning, or speaking to classes like driver’s ed. Our CSAs and mental health staff roles will be the same as this year.
Our students’ voices are important, and we want to hear from them now as we plan for the return of SROs to our schools.
Three ways your student can learn more:
-
During lunch on Thursday, September 11 (and again on Thursday, October 9), Dr. Malone, Dr. Gurley, and a CPD officer will be in A commons so students can come ask questions.
-
During Impact on Friday, September 12 (and again on Friday, October 10), we will hold special info sessions so students can learn more, share feedback, and ask questions. Students can check their email or Canvas to find the sign-up form.
- You and your student can also visit charlottesvilleschools.org/SROs to learn more and share your feedback. (Information about weekly “info hours” for adults throughout September and October is also available on that webpage. Staff will receive information about staff opportunities as well.)

Two winners of the Edgar and Eleanor Shannon Foundation for Excellence in Public Education grants for the 2025-26 school year are CHS teachers! Congratulations:
-
Andrew Manning, a physics teacher at CHS, won $3,473 for “Seeing the Invisible: Bringing Particle Physics to Life through Cloud Chambers.” High school Physics students will “see the invisible” as they observe real subatomic particles in action using cloud chambers, transforming radiation from abstract concepts to observable experiences.
-
Samantha Pagni, an art teacher at CHS, won $4,927 for “3D Design: Pottery and Sculpture.” High school Visual Arts students will integrate three-dimensional design into their artistic practice as they explore creative possibilities in clay and experiment with innovative forms, materials, and concepts.

To address unsafe street conditions during student arrival and dismissal, the City of Charlottesville has installed school zone speed cameras at Charlottesville Middle School (formerly Buford), Tall Oaks Elementary (formerly Johnson), and Summit Elementary (formerly Clark). Depending on where you live in the city, this is something for staff, parents, and student-drivers to be very aware of on their way to/from CHS every day. At the start of the year, cameras started monitoring for speeding violations during arrival and dismissal. Initially, warnings were given to motorists; as of this Monday, September 8, citations will be issued. Violators who speed 11 MPH over the posted speed limit through a school zone during enforcement hours will be issued a $50 fine. Learn more.
⌚ At Summit and Tall Oaks elementaries, enforcement times are 7:30-8:30am and 2-3pm.
⌚ At Charlottesville Middle School, enforcement times are 8-9am and 2:45-3:45pm.

This August, our division proudly opened the doors to the new academic building of Charlottesville Middle School, serving 7th and 8th grade now (and welcoming 6th grade in 2026 once a major renovation of the old Buford buildings is complete). Many of our Black Knight students and families helped make this project a reality, from advocating for funding to giving feedback about what our students need from a modern middle school. Come and see the amazing results! Principal Rodney Jordan and VMDO architects are leading tours this fall. Sign up for a tour of CMS here.

Off & Away
Our "Off and Away" device expectations have made a noticeable difference in both our schoolwide environment and classroom communities. In classrooms especially, we've seen improvements in student discussions, interpersonal connections, and overall engagement.
Student personal devices must be Off and Away during the school day: 9am - 4pm. Confiscated phones are turned into the main office.
Confiscated phones may only be picked up by an approved family member and will not be provided back to students.

CHS promotes the value of daily and on-time arrival for school and classes as a significant indicator of student success.

After-school Buy-Back or Lunch Detention
Student on-time arrival to class is critical for student success and class community development.
Student tardiness will be monitored on a daily basis.
Students who are excessively tardy (either by the frequency of tardiness or by the number of minutes) may be assigned After-school Buy Back from 4:00pm - 5pm or lunch detention.
CHS admin or staff will contact families whose students are assigned either Buy-Back of lunch detention.
Students who stay after school can either be picked-up or use the 5pm Activity Bus. Of course, approved students may also self-transport.

- There are vaccines that are required to attend school--if your student is not up to date on their required vaccines, the nurse will be reaching out.
- Students should not carry medication on their person without the approval of the nurse and their administrator.
- If your student needs to take any medication at school, you must complete a Medication permission form. You may get this form from the school nurse. All medication must be in the original container. Parents must provide all medication, even over the counter medication such as Tylenol, Motrin or Benadryl for their student; the school will not provide any medication for students.

This section is allocated to PTO updates.
PTO Meetings: 2nd Monday of each Month at CHS and via Zoom.
Next Meeting: Monday, September 8th, 2025.
CHS has an active PTO which helps support our students and teachers and staff.
The PTO is here to build strong partnerships between families, teachers, and administrators, and we are proud to play a role in helping our school thrive. Whether it's supporting classroom needs through teacher grants, organizing breakfasts and teacher appreciation, or fostering communication between staff and families, our goal is to help create a positive and enriching environment for every student.
We invite all families to get involved in a way that’s comfortable for your family. That may be volunteering, attending our monthly meetings, “liking” our posts, or anything in between.
