A Note from Dr. Malone

Dear Black Knights -

This week’s note highlights our ongoing CHS Celebrations feature, along with a reminders about our school closure this Friday for a Mental Wellness Day. You’ll also find an update on Impact Time schedule as we continue refining this important structure for academic support and enrichment.

This Friday - September 19th, Charlottesville City Schools are closed for a Mental Wellness Day. This day is a reminder for all of us take a moment for ourselves. It also a reminder about our own self-worth and the value of taking care ourselves as we try to be our best for others.

Please stay connected to updates from your student's teachers including via ParentSquare or direct calls to you. Teacher updates will include sharing our students’ creative work in the classroom, info on upcoming assignments and assessments and reminders that engagement, experiences, and excellence are alive across CHS classrooms.

We have a full and exciting week ahead, even thought it's shorter than usual. Let's all do our part to make this week the best week ever!

I love the Knight Life!

Announcement for CHS students to learn about SROs, with dates and times listed.

Engaging Our Students on Topic of SROs

In March, the School Board voted to add Charlottesville Police Department officers to our school’s safety plan. Starting next August, two “school resource officers” (SROs) will be at CHS to handle police-related tasks like emergencies, safety planning, or speaking to classes like driver’s ed. Our CSAs and mental health staff roles will be the same as this year.

Our students’ voices are important, and we want to hear from them now as we plan for the return of SROs to our schools.

Three ways your student can learn more:
  • Our next SRO engagement session with students will be on Thursday, October 9. Similar to the last sessions, the following staff will be available: Dr. Malone, Dr. Gurley, and school board representatives. We will be in A commons so students can come ask questions.
  • There will be a follow-up session on during Impact on Friday, October 10), we will hold special info sessions so students can learn more, share feedback, and ask questions. Students can check their email or Canvas to find the sign-up form.
  • You and your student can also visit charlottesvilleschools.org/SROs to learn more and share your feedback. (Information about weekly “info hours” for adults throughout September and October is also available on that webpage. Staff will receive information about staff opportunities as well.)

CHS Football - A win for all of us!

The team, the band, the cheer squad, and the students...everyone had a role in our historic win this past Friday against John Marshall!

Friday's theme was Black Out but that did not stop the Black Knight Nation from shining bright!

Congratulations to Coach T and the CHS Football Team!

School Zone Speed Cameras: $50 Fines Begin This Monday

To address unsafe street conditions during student arrival and dismissal, the City of Charlottesville has installed school zone speed cameras at Charlottesville Middle School (formerly Buford), Tall Oaks Elementary (formerly Johnson), and Summit Elementary (formerly Clark). Depending on where you live in the city, this is something for staff, parents, and student-drivers to be very aware of on their way to/from CHS every day. At the start of the year, cameras started monitoring for speeding violations during arrival and dismissal. Initially, warnings were given to motorists; as of this Monday, September 8, citations will be issued. Violators who speed 11 MPH over the posted speed limit through a school zone during enforcement hours will be issued a $50 fine. Learn more.
⌚ At Summit and Tall Oaks elementaries, enforcement times are 7:30-8:30am and 2-3pm.
⌚ At Charlottesville Middle School, enforcement times are 8-9am and 2:45-3:45pm.

After-school Buy-Back or Lunch Detention
Student on-time arrival to class is critical for student success and class community development.
Student tardiness will be monitored on a daily basis.
Students who are excessively tardy (either by the frequency of tardiness or by the number of minutes) may be assigned After-school Buy Back from 4:00pm - 5pm or lunch detention.
CHS admin or staff will contact families whose students are assigned either Buy-Back of lunch detention.
Students who stay after school can either be picked-up or use the 5pm Activity Bus. Of course, approved students may also self-transport.

Reminders From the School Nurse

  • There are vaccines that are required to attend school--if your student is not up to date on their required vaccines, the nurse will be reaching out.
  • Students should not carry medication on their person without the approval of the nurse and their administrator.
  • If your student needs to take any medication at school, you must complete a Medication permission form. You may get this form from the school nurse. All medication must be in the original container. Parents must provide all medication, even over the counter medication such as Tylenol, Motrin or Benadryl for their student; the school will not provide any medication for students.
