Dear Black Knights,
This week’s update highlights ways for families to connect with their student’s teachers before the end of the 1st Quarter. You’ll also find reminders about our After-School Tutoring and Buy-Back program starting Tuesday, September 30, and details on the next student engagement session about the return of SROs to schools.
Quarter 1 Timeline
- The end of Quarter 1 is Monday, October 13.
-
Friday, October 3 is Family/Teacher Conference Day (no school for students).
- Teachers have been reaching out to schedule appointments for Friday or alternate times. I’ve directed teachers to prioritize meetings with families of students who are at risk (grades of D or lower) or who are struggling with engagement.
PowerSchool Access
If you cannot meet with teachers this Friday, please be sure to request another opportunity to connect virtually or in-person. Continue to stay in touch through ParentSquare or email—reciprocal communication is critical to our success.
We do this work together.
I Love the Knight Life!

Additionally, 11 CHS seniors were recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars for exceptional academic promise: Corbett Adamson, Levi Beling, Augustus Bryan, Lila Castleman, Berren Dreier, Anne Goodall, David Jaffe, Samuel Klug, Evin Nelson, Owen Paulson, and Leo Wimberley.

Off & Away
Our "Off and Away" device expectations have made a noticeable difference in both our schoolwide environment and classroom communities. In classrooms especially, we've seen improvements in student discussions, interpersonal connections, and overall engagement.
Student personal devices must be Off and Away during the school day: 9am - 4pm. Confiscated phones are turned into the main office.
Confiscated phones may only be picked up by an approved family member and will not be provided back to students.
Attendance
CHS promotes the value of daily and on-time arrival for school and classes as a significant indicator of student success.
Please help your student with their on-time arrival.
Families can contact Tabitha Gore - our Attendance Technician - for all absence updates including responding to any attendance notifications.
You can communicate with Ms. Gore by:
- Calling 434 245 2410
- Email at goret2@charlottesvilleschools.org
- Provide or drop-off a note to the front attendance desk
- ParentSquare message Tabitha Gore
Students who have excessive absences make-up (buy-back) time during the After-school program or during Saturday Academic Intervention (SAI - dates forthcoming).

After-school Buy-Back or Lunch Detention
Student on-time arrival to class is critical for student success and class community development.
Student tardiness will be monitored on a daily basis.
Students who are excessively tardy (either by the frequency of tardiness or by the number of minutes) may be assigned After-school Buy Back from 4:00pm - 5pm (Tuesday/Thursdays) or lunch detention (daily). This includes students in the halls without Passes during our Tardy Sweeps (tardy checks after the bell has rung between classes).
CHS admin or staff will contact families whose students are assigned either Buy-Back or lunch detention.
Students who stay after school can either be picked-up or use the 5pm Activity Bus. Of course, approved students may also self-transport.

In March, the School Board voted to add Charlottesville Police Department officers to our school’s safety plan. Starting next August, two “school resource officers” (SROs) will be at CHS to handle police-related tasks like emergencies, safety planning, or speaking to classes like driver’s ed. Our CSAs and mental health staff roles will be the same as this year.
Our students’ voices are important, and we want to hear from them now as we plan for the return of SROs to our schools.
Three ways your student can learn more:
-
Our next SRO engagement session with students will be on Thursday, October 9. Similar to the last sessions, the following staff will be available: Dr. Malone, Dr. Gurley, and school board representatives. We will be in A commons so students can come ask questions.
-
There will be a follow-up session on during Impact on Friday, October 10), we will hold special info sessions so students can learn more, share feedback, and ask questions. Students can check their email or Canvas to find the sign-up form.
- You and your student can also visit charlottesvilleschools.org/SROs to learn more and share your feedback. (Information about weekly “info hours” for adults throughout September and October is also available on that webpage. Staff will receive information about staff opportunities as well.)

- There are vaccines that are required to attend school--if your student is not up to date on their required vaccines, the nurse will be reaching out.
- Students should not carry medication on their person without the approval of the nurse and their administrator.
- If your student needs to take any medication at school, you must complete a Medication permission form. You may get this form from the school nurse. All medication must be in the original container. Parents must provide all medication, even over the counter medication such as Tylenol, Motrin or Benadryl for their student; the school will not provide any medication for students.
