A Note from Dr. Malone

Dear Families —

This week’s note includes updates on upcoming events, including items after winter break that may require student or family engagement.

First, CHS, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, will administer the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. The purpose of the student survey is to measure student support, engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions within each school. The information gathered is used to guide educational practices that foster safe, supportive learning environments.
CHS expects to survey students on Wednesday, January 14, during 5th period. Information about the climate survey was shared earlier today in a separate post, which can be accessed here:

Second, CHS is beginning our academic advising and master scheduling process for the 2026–2027 school year. This process includes school counselors meeting with each returning CHS student in early spring to discuss course options for the coming year. This past Thursday, CCS presented the Program of Studies to the School Board, highlighting new courses and expanded learning pathways available to students.
As part of this work, CHS will host a Curriculum Fair on January 21 to showcase our full range of course offerings, including partnerships with PVCC and CATEC programs. This year, we will also highlight the many clubs and activities available at CHS by inviting students and sponsors to showcase these student-led opportunities. Look for additional information about the Curriculum Fair and academic advising process over the next two weeks.

Lastly, our next PTO meeting is tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in person, with a Zoom option available. Additional PTO information is included below in this newsletter.

Amanda Williams

Amanda Williams - CHS Teacher of the Year

Recently, CCS announced Teachers of the Year for each CCS school, including CHS's very own, Amanda Williams. Ms. Williams is a veteran member of our English Department and the English Department Chair.

She embodies the highest standards of the profession through her instructional excellence, leadership, and unwavering commitment to students. As English Department Chair, she brings clarity, collaboration, and compassion to her team, ensuring that instructional decisions are grounded in equity and best practice. She consistently advocates for students at all levels—advanced, on-level, and those who require additional support—so that every learner has access to rigorous, meaningful English instruction.

Ms. Williams is deeply committed to helping students recognize their own strengths and value. She builds trusting relationships, creates inclusive classroom spaces, and uses restorative and reflective practices that empower students to take ownership of their learning. Her encouragement has been a decisive factor in helping students regain confidence, reconnect with school, and remain focused on their plan to graduate.

I am deeply proud to celebrate Amanda's accomplishments and honored to be her colleague. Please join me and CHS when the division will recognize Amanda and celebrate all CCS School Teachers of the Year, as well as the Charlottesville Teacher of the Year, at the January 8, 2025, School Board Meeting.

The pantry will be located in the front lobby between the two sets of entrance doors. We are waiting on the delivery of our shelf, but in the meantime we will be using the table that is set up. I know it's a big ask, but if you find yourself at the store tonight or tomorrow consider grabbing an item or two. Of course, we will be taking donations at any time going forward, but heading into this long weekend some families are feeling anxious. We also have a live Amazon Wishlist if that is more convenien
