Dear Black Knights -
In this week's update, I want to draw specific attention to Mandi Gregory (Pathway Advisor at CHS) and her newsletter updates (below). Ms. Gregory provides updates and resources for college and career planning. Some of the critical information she provides includes scholarship resources, job placement and job training opportunities, and forthcoming events related to post-secondary (post-graduation!) life.
CHS also continues to honor Black History Month with a combination of small, intimate celebrations while also elevating Black culture and Black achievements through larger-scale events for both staff and students. This past Friday, staff were served butter pecan ice cream.
Why Butter Pecan?
This flavor is a beloved favorite among Black Americans in the South and is often considered a classic staple within soul food traditions. It represents more than just a sweet treat; it reflects a rich cultural heritage that makes our celebration even more meaningful.
The event was dedicated to Augustus Jackson, often referred to as the Father of Ice Cream, an incredible historical innovator who helped transform the world of dessert forever. His creativity, skill, and entrepreneurial spirit paved the way for lasting change, and on Friday, we celebrated his excellence and remarkable legacy.
Forthcoming Black History Month events include student groups traveling to the African-American History Museum in Washington, DC, and trips to the Virginia Museum of Fine Art to see art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.
Our event planning also includes musical interludes, student art exhibits and presentations, visits from HBCUs, and a Black business expo.
Thank you to our Black History Month Planning Committee, including Yumeca Webb-Jordan and Nytasha Garland, who have led the coordination of these events and experiences.
On behalf of the Black Knight Nation,
Dr. Malone
