BLACK KNIGHT NATION

Weekly News from Charlottesville High School

February 22, 2026

A Note from Dr. Malone

Dear Black Knights -

As we move through February, we continue to honor Black History Month — a time to recognize the enduring contributions, leadership, innovation, and cultural influence of Black Americans. At CHS, this is both a celebration and a commitment. We celebrate the achievements and voices that have shaped our nation and our school community, and we recommit ourselves to ensuring that belonging, opportunity, and excellence are lived experiences for every student.

This past week also marked the beginning of Ramadan, the sacred month observed by Muslims around the world. Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and generosity. For many in our CHS community, it is a deeply meaningful spiritual season centered on discipline, gratitude, and service to others. We are mindful that some students and staff will be fasting from sunrise to sunset, and we encourage compassion, understanding, and support for one another throughout the month.

The Black Knight Nation is strengthened by the richness of our identities, traditions, and histories. This has long been a deeply rooted and defining feature of our school community — the intentional acknowledgment, elevation, and integration of diverse cultures, beliefs, and traditions. When we pause to learn from and honor one another, we grow stronger and closer as a community.

Thank you for helping make our school a place where respect and care guide us every day.

SWIM

CHS Swim Team

Charlottesville’s swimmers delivered a championship-level performance at the VHSL Class 4 State Meet this weekend in Richmond, with junior Sophia Lipinski opening the week by earning a 7th-place podium finish in diving in Newport News.
On Saturday, the boys were powered by Garrett Wispelway’s runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke — shattering a school record set just last year — and Ernest Winling’s scoring swim and personal best in the 100 backstroke.
The girls matched that momentum. Laney Keller placed 5th in the 100 backstroke, breaking her own school record, and added a personal best in the 200 IM. The 4x100 freestyle relay team of Ada Brantley, Charlotte McCready, Alicia Yori Kosek, and Keller rewrote history, breaking a 25-year-old school record and finishing just off the podium in 9th, while also placing 11th in the medley relay. Brantley and McCready added key points in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Records fell. Personal bests were set. Podium finishes were earned. A tremendous showing by our Black Knights on the state stage.
Wrestling

CHS Wrestling

CHS Wrestling delivered a powerful performance at the VHSL Class 4 State Championships, finishing 12th overall in the state and capping a truly historic season.
Sophomore Roman Calvani entered the tournament as the 7-seed and wrestled his way to a remarkable 2nd-place finish at 190 lbs., falling only in the state finals to the eventual champion. Junior Theo Reinhart earned 3rd place at 157 lbs., dropping a razor-close 3–0 semifinal bout to the eventual champion. Senior Adriel Pena also claimed 3rd at 113 lbs., with his only loss coming in a narrow 7–5 match to the state runner-up. Senior Walter Pilkey added to the team’s point total with a 6th-place finish at 150 lbs.; prior to an injury that cut his day short, his only loss was to the eventual state champion.
Grit. Discipline. Pride. This team competed with class and heart on the state’s biggest stage — a season that will be remembered for both its results and the way our Black Knights represented CHS.
