Dear Black Knights –
This week’s update includes celebrations of our Indoor Track team as they prepare to compete in the State Championships. We also celebrate the successful run of West Side Story — our vibrant, joyful, and thoroughly entertaining spring musical, which concluded today.
As we close Black History Month, CHS remains clear in its belief that honoring Black history — and the traditions and achievements that strengthen our entire Black Knight Nation — is work that continues all year. In that spirit, we will host an upcoming assembly honoring Black history and lifting our students’ voices and experiences. Students in our African American History courses will also soon visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
Below, you will see images from our recent visit to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where students experienced the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, explored Richmond’s history through the Valentine Museum, and participated in the downtown mural walk.
Our objective remains steady: to create meaningful opportunities for students to travel, engage, and learn — within Charlottesville and beyond. These experiences build culture, empathy, perspective, and lasting memories. Not only during Black History Month but throughout the Charlottesville High School school year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Malone

Our CHS production of West Side Story was a tremendous success — and a powerful showcase of our students.
From the performers on stage to the crew behind the scenes, our students demonstrated extraordinary talent, discipline, and heart. They carried complex themes of identity, belonging, conflict, and love with maturity and care. The singing, choreography, acting, and technical work reflected both artistic excellence and deep commitment.
Most importantly, this production reflected the very best of the Black Knight Nation. Our cast and crew embodied the rich, multicultural and multiethnic community that defines Charlottesville High School. Each student brought talent, passion, discipline - AND CHARISMA - to create something truly special.
Bravo to Mr. Becker and the entire cast and crew of West Side Story.

Our local public library, Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) will be visiting CHS for tabling in B Commons during lunches on Friday, March 13 and Friday, April 17. They will be sharing information about their teen programming, the JMRL internship/scholarship program, and general library services and resources (they have so much more than just books!).
JMRL has also offered to deliver library cards on the tabling days for students that submit a library card application ahead of time.
Students can return library card applications to the school counseling office, or you are welcome to drop forms in my mailbox.
Two notes about the library card application form:
1) A parent/guardian signature is required for students under age 18
2) Students are not required to present photo ID (as noted on the form) since I will be able to confirm their address before I return the forms to JMRL
