A Note from Dr. Malone

Dear CHS Community,

As we return from Spring Break, I am going to ask the entire CHS community to meet the moment before us. The time between now and the end of the school year will fly by, which means that each day, each class period, and each moment is valuable to ending the school year with purpose and quality.

We have less than 35 school days remaining for most students. For seniors, that timeline is less than 25 days. The expectation remains for all of our students to show up on time, to give their best, and to see the value in the supporting opportunities that are available (after-school tutoring, 1:1 teacher conferencing), and to continue to engage and give their best in experiences that enhance the learning environment (athletics, clubs, spirit events, and, for juniors and seniors, Prom).

Families, your contribution remains crucial: support your student in showing up on time to school and class; affirm your student’s capacity to self-advocate; communicate with us about needs or concerns; and participate in and engage with school-based events, such as PTO meetings and our forthcoming Plant Sale and Eco Fairs. Your participation in school events is a strong feature of our school community and a meaningful way to strengthen the alignment between home and school, which impacts student wellness, student performance, and overall school health.

I do hope Spring Break was a restful and rejuvenating time for everyone—time that helped you reset and recharge.

Lastly, I am including a brief survey below for your input on academic rigor in CCS, as the deadline to complete the survey is this Friday.

Take Our Academic Rigor/Gifted Survey
How well is your child academically challenged and engaged at school? How does our unique gifted model support your student’s learning? Charlottesville City Schools invites all parents/guardians to fill out a short, 3–5 minute survey about academic rigor and gifted education in our division. Information gathered in this survey will be used to inform teaching and learning across the curriculum.
Deadline: April 17

I look forward to a safe and joyful return tomorrow to CHS and to a full and successful end to this school year.

Our local public library, Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) will be visiting CHS for tabling in B Commons during lunches on Friday, April 17. They will be sharing information about their teen programming, the JMRL internship/scholarship program, and general library services and resources (they have so much more than just books!).

JMRL has also offered to deliver library cards on the tabling days for students that submit a library card application ahead of time.

Students can return library card applications to the school counseling office, or you are welcome to drop forms in my mailbox.

Two notes about the library card application form:
1) A parent/guardian signature is required for students under age 18
2) Students are not required to present photo ID (as noted on the form) since I will be able to confirm their address before I return the forms to JMRL
