A Note from Dr. Malone

Dear Black Knights,

Our seniors' last day was Friday, and it was so special.

Several of our Link Crew student mentors led and facilitated a pep rally at Charlottesville Middle School to help prepare and excite our rising 9th graders for their transition to CHS.
Thank you to Mr. Jordan for supporting this plan. A special thank you also goes to CHS students Caja Edwards and Orianna Smith, who championed the idea, helped with the planning, and led the activities for this celebratory event.

At CHS, our seniors completed their final day with a beautiful walk through the halls, where they were cheered on and celebrated by the Black Knight Nation. This event was made possible by our senior SCA and staff sponsors, Rod Durrer and Pam Brown. It was a sweet, heartfelt event that will become a new tradition for CHS!

Lastly, as our seniors rehearse for their Wednesday graduation, they are invited to return to the CCS elementary schools they attended for an Elementary Graduation Walk, where they will be cheered on by the staff and students of their elementary alma maters.

I share these senior events with our entire community so we can all join in the culminating celebrations of our graduating class. These events are also shared to inspire ideas for our next graduating cohorts and to highlight how rewarding and special it is to reach this precious milestone with an entire community of families, students, and staff who believed in and motivated our Black Knights along the way.

To be sure, as we honor our senior graduates, we also know that all of our students are staying focused on completing the work in front of them for a successful end to the school year. We want all of our students to end the year with pride in their work and a sense of purpose as they look ahead to the new school year.

We are the Black Knight Nation!

CHS Urban Farming

From our Garden to our Kitchen

For the first time in an official capacity, the Charlottesville High School Urban Farming program is providing food that was grown in its garden for meals in the CHS school cafeteria.

On Tuesday, May 12, teacher Peter Davis and students from his Urban Farming and Marketing II class successfully harvested lettuce from 52 individual plants in the garden in the CHS Urban Farm and delivered them to the school cafeteria.

Nutritional professionals cleaned and prepared the lettuce on Wednesday morning and will serve the lettuce in its chef salads as part of this week’s nutritional offerings at CHS.

“We are excited about this partnership and look forward to featuring lettuce grown by the Urban Farming class in the chef salads served at CHS,” said Charlottesville City Schools Nutrition Administrator Carlton L. Jones. “This collaboration gives students the opportunity to see locally grown produce incorporated directly into our school meals.”

Being able to provide fresh produce to the school cafeteria was a proud achievement for Davis and his Urban Farming students as they come to the end of the 2025-26 school year.

“It’s been our goal for the past few years to create a garden-to-cafeteria model.” Davis said. “We’ve had to focus a lot on the infrastructure of the school farm recently, but we are now poised to grow large quantities of produce and are excited to start featuring it in the cafeteria.”

Davis is excited about the new partnership that will see the CHS Urban Farming program provide fresh produce to the school as part of a growing garden-to-cafeteria model.

“We are hopeful that our Urban Farming program can help alleviate some of the pressure of creating healthy and fresh meals for our students on a limited budget,” Davis said. “You can't get any more fresh and local than in the backyard of this school and my students are excited to see the food that they have grown from seed served up in the cafeteria.”

CHS Urban Farming

CHS Urban Farming is launching a new opportunity to help us keep our garden thriving this summer. Check out the attached flyer for our Adopt a Row program. We cannot emphasize enough how little gardening experience you need in order to help, how incredibly flexible the time required can be and especially how much help it will be to our school community! We would appreciate it if you would share this flyer with anyone else you think might be interested.
