A Note from Dr. Malone

Happy New Year, CHS Families!

“The only choice we have is either to accept the world as it is or to change it.”
— W. H. Auden

I believe that every day offers an opportunity to renew, reset, or recommit—to change a habit, improve a behavior, or return to the values we hold dear. In that sense, New Year’s Day is much like any other day. Looked at another way, however, the start of a new year serves as an elevated reminder to be intentional about what matters most—and to pursue it with focus, energy, and resolve.

I guess time away from school has a way of putting my heart on my sleeve...it happens.
That's because I’ve missed you all and am excited to return to the daily routines, the relationships, and the shared work that make Charlottesville High School such a special place. I hope you have enjoyed a restful, warm, and meaningful winter break.

Our return will be met with a busy and important stretch of work in the weeks and months ahead. This includes preparing for next year’s master schedule and course and program offerings. Our school counselors will soon begin meeting with students to review graduation progress and help develop plans that support both success and meaningful experiences on the path to graduation. This month, CHS will also host a PTO meeting (January 12) and Curriculum Night (January 21), where updates on our planning will be shared. Please be sure to read today’s newsletter and future communications for more information.

As always, CHS is strongest when we are aligned around a shared purpose. At its core, that purpose is simple and demanding: to ensure every student experiences a school that is safe, healthy, relevant, and deeply engaging.

The year ahead will move quickly—let’s meet it together with clarity, commitment, and care.

Lastly, tomorrow (Monday, January 5, 2026) is a Teacher Workday. Students will return Tuesday, January 6th.

CHS Daily Routines: Reminders

Please review the following routines and call the school with any questions

Report Cards/Grades

Tomorrow (January 5th, 2026) is a Teacher Workday for CHS. This time is provided to help teachers finalize 1st semester/2nd quarter grades and comments.

Report Cards will be shared with CHS families via ParentSquare on or around January 15, 2026.
A hard copy will not be sent/mailed.

While grades may not be accessible this upcoming week as grades and comments are finalized, families and students are encouraged to use and access the PowerSchool portal throughout the year for the most up to date information on your student's grades. This provides you with the most current and accurate overview on how your student is performing in any course.

Students are expected to connect with their teachers for any questions or concerns they have about their grades and to work with their families to help them have access to the PowerSchool parent portal.

Upcoming School Events and Engagements

Climate Survey and Academic Advising

In cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, CHS will administer the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. The purpose of the student survey is to measure student support, engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions within each school. The information gathered is used to guide educational practices that foster safe, supportive learning environments.
CHS expects to survey students on Wednesday, January 14, during 5th period. Information about the climate survey was shared earlier today in a separate post, which can be accessed here:

Second, CHS is beginning our academic advising and master scheduling process for the 2026–2027 school year. This process includes school counselors meeting with each returning CHS student in early spring to discuss course options for the coming year. This past Thursday, CCS presented the Program of Studies to the School Board, highlighting new courses and expanded learning pathways available to students.
As part of this work, CHS will host a Curriculum Fair on January 21 to showcase our full range of course offerings, including partnerships with PVCC and CATEC programs. This year, we will also highlight the many clubs and activities available at CHS by inviting students and sponsors to showcase these student-led opportunities. Look for additional information about the Curriculum Fair and academic advising process over the next two weeks.
