CHARLOTTESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

A Note from Dr. Malone

Dear Black Knight Families,

CHS is experiencing an excellent start to this school year. Our veteran student leaders and our exceptional staff continue to shape our culture and sense of belonging, helping welcome our freshmen who have started this year with a positive mindset and a strong grasp of routines and expectations.

The upcoming week will be our first full week of school and will include cohort assemblies for each grade level. During this time, we will review the expectations students should follow to be successful at CHS. We will also discuss adjustments to this year's Bell Schedule and the dedicated daily time we are calling Homeroom (on Mondays) and WIN ("What I Need" on other days). More information on our Bell Schedule is provided below.

The key refrain that CHS will affirm again and again—for staff and for students—is simple:
  • Show up
  • Give your best
  • Ask for help
  • Be good and kind to others

Our Core Values—Community, Honesty, and Striving—are interwoven into our daily routines, our instructional planning, and our school-wide expectations. They are simple traits that remind us we are at our best when we work together to become something better and when we do so with integrity.

We all have a role in helping CHS be the Black Knight Nation, so thank you for giving us your best and setting us on the path for our most successful school year ever.

The Future is Us. The Moment is Now.

CHS Updates and Routines

A split schedule displays class times for Monday and Block days, with periods and times listed.

CHS Bell Schedule 26-27

CHS has modified our bell schedule this school year to further build on our high-quality instructional routines and to assure we provide time and intention for deep learning, tiered instruction, expanded student opportunities, and targeted support.

Anchor Days
In short, most Mondays will be our anchor days (singleton days) when students will attend all of their classes along with Homeroom.

Homeroom
  • On anchor days, students attend Homeroom.
  • During Homeroom, students and staff will determine the scheduled locations that best serve each individual student's needs for the rest of the week.
  • Homeroom groups are organized by student cohort.
  • CHS will also continue the critical development of socio-emotional learning (SEL Time) during Homeroom.

Block Days
  • Most Tuesdays through Fridays will be alternating block days (Black/Odd and Orange/ Even Days), which feature longer instructional periods.
  • Block days also include WIN time ("What I Need" time), during which students attend the specific sessions selected during Monday Homeroom.

WIN Time
  • WIN time may be used for additional practice, guided instruction, makeup assessments, or assignments—and later in the semester, for clubs, enrichment, or student-directed experiences.
  • During WIN, students may be assigned to visit different classrooms as needed. CHS also plans to hold school or cohort assemblies during WIN time.

A link to the Bell Schedule is provided below, including a full-year calendar overview.

The words COMMUNITY, HONESTY, and STRIVING are displayed in bold black text with the first letters highlighted in orange.

CCS Student Rights and Responsibilities

2026-2027

Charlottesville City Schools Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R) for 2026-2027.

CCS Student Rights and Responsibilities 26-27

Included below is the Charlottesville City Schools (CCS) Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR\&R) 2026-2027, a comprehensive guide designed to maintain safe, equitable, and orderly learning environments for all students. CCS students, staff, and families are expected to know this information as we each have a specific role in assuring our schools remain safe, productive, and free from harm.

Core Philosophy and Applicability

Purpose:
The handbook defines behavioral expectations and provides instructional interventions and responses to support student growth, focusing on restorative practices over purely punitive discipline.

Jurisdiction:
Rules apply on all school property, during school-sponsored activities, on school vehicles, at bus stops, and during travel to/from school.

Restorative Justice in Education (RJE):
The division emphasizes community-building and healing to address harm, ensuring consequences are intentional and educational.

Stakeholder Roles

Students:
Have the right to a safe, fair, and equitable education and the responsibility to conduct themselves respectfully, attend school regularly, and follow division expectations.

Parents/Guardians:
Act as partners in education with the right to be informed of policies and student progress, and the responsibility to support school efforts, promote positive behavior, and ensure attendance.

Employees:
Responsible for maintaining safe environments, implementing rigorous instruction, and enforcing policies fairly.

Behavioral Framework

Misconduct is categorized into levels, with consequences becoming more intensive based on severity, frequency, and safety impact:

Leveled Responses (Levels 1–5)
Frameworks range from classroom-level interventions (e.g., warnings, seat changes) to administrative referrals (e.g., long-term suspension or expulsion).

 Behavior Categories:
These include Academic Progress (BAP), School Operations (BSO), Relationship Behaviors (RB), Safety Concerns (BSC), Endangering Self/Others (BESO), and Persistently Dangerous (PD) behaviors.

Determining Consequences:
Administrators consider factors such as the student's age, disability status, prior record, willingness to repair harm, and the severity of the offense.

Transportation Safety

Bus riding is a privilege requiring adherence to safety rules. Drivers report infractions to principals; continued misconduct may result in the suspension of transportation privileges. Students younger than 2nd grade must be met by an authorized adult at afternoon bus stops.

Off and Away: Phones and Confiscations

CHS expects phone to be Off and Away during our school day. This expectation was adopted in the Fall 2024 and endures as it has made a tremendous impact on our learning culture, our connectedness within our community, and with reinforcing positive social interactions throughout the school day including during lunches and in classrooms.

Families are partners in supporting this expectation which includes the responsibility of picking up confiscated phones from the main office.

Off & Away
  • Student personal devices must be Off and Away during the school day: 9am - 4pm.
  • Confiscated phones are turned into the main office.
  • CHS Office Staff will ParentSquare/message families if phones are confiscated
  • Confiscated phones may only be picked up by an approved family member and will not be provided back to students.
