A Note from Dr. Malone

Dear Black Knight Families,

Labor Day is our annual celebration of the value, contributions, achievements, and aspirations of our collective community of workers.

I don't think CHS is unique in valuing Labor Day both for what it means but for the time it provides us - to rest, to be with family, and to have more time to prepare for our school week.

I want to express my appreciation for our team of workers: our teachers, custodians, nutrition workers, school counselors, administrators, office staff, paraprofessionals, CSAs. and the entire CHS work force for how their labor contributes to our special and thriving school community.

Personally, I also welcome this upcoming week - and the following (no school on 9/18/26) - as both provide us a 4-day work week and 3-day weekend: a timely formula for balance and productivity.

Ultimately, a school is only as strong as the community that surrounds it. CHS deeply honors the labor, talent, and energy all of you bring to your daily work. Your individual contributions fuel our local economy, lift up our neighborhoods, and model for our students what it means to build a meaningful, interconnected community.

However you spent the long weekend: resting, spending time with loved ones, or catching up on personal projects, I hope you feel your best.

NEW VISITOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AT OUR SCHOOL

As part of our ongoing commitment to campus safety, our district is transitioning to Raptor Technologies for visitor management, replacing our previous Securly system. The Raptor system allows us to keep better track of all guests entering our school while ensuring our campus remains secure. Here is what you need to know when visiting us this year:

What to Expect When You Arrive

When visiting during school hours, check-in is quick and self-guided:

Photo ID: Please bring your government-issued driver’s license or photo ID.
Self-Check-In iPad: You will scan the front and back of your driver's license directly at the front desk iPad kiosk and take a quick photo. (Our front desk staff or admin tech will be right there if you need help or need manual entry!)

Save Time with the Raptor App

You can save time and a few steps by downloading the Raptor Safe App before your visit:

Set up your profile and enter your details in advance.
The app will generate a personal QR code.
When you arrive, simply scan your QR code at the iPad kiosk for a fast check-in!

Pre-Registering for School Events

For special school events, assemblies, or classroom visits, we will send out a pre-registration link ahead of time. Registering online beforehand will help check-ins run a lot more efficiently.

CHS & CCS SNACK DRIVE

Our school is partnering with the Charlottesville City Schools Family And Community Engagement (FACE) Team for a district-wide Snack Drive running from Tuesday, September 1st through Friday, October 2nd.

Having access to daily snacks helps ensure our students stay energized, focused, and ready to learn. If you would like to support, there are two easy ways to donate:

Drop Off Donations: Drop off items at our main office or at the Division Annex (1400 Melbourne Road).

Come and see the fully renovated and expanded Charlottesville Middle School! Prospective families and members of the community can now take guided tours of CMS.

Off and Away: Phones and Confiscations

Off & Away

Student personal devices must be Off and Away during the school day: 9am - 4pm.
Confiscated phones are turned into the main office.
CHS Office Staff will ParentSquare/message families if phones are confiscated
Confiscated phones may only be picked up by an approved family member and will not be provided back to students.

This year, our PTO Meetings occur on the 4th Tuesday of each Month at CHS and via Zoom @ 7pm.

The first PTO Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd @ 7pm.
