A Note from Dr. Malone

Black Knights –

This upcoming week is a full one for CHS and Charlottesville City Schools.

Our PTO meeting is this Tuesday, September 22 at CHS in A Commons. The PTO meeting will include an update on the PTO budget, event planning for this school year, and an overview of PTO member roles and responsibilities.

On Wednesday, September 23, CHS is holding the Budget Bistro (details below).

This Friday, we are hosting our first pep rally of the year, featuring a school-wide parade walk to the CHS stadium to kick off our fall sports season. This is our first pep rally in recent memory to be held at the stadium!

Please note that this is a student-and-staff-only event. We are finalizing plans to ensure all students have a meaningful, safe, and inclusive experience, including accommodations for those with mobility, sensory, or other specific needs.

Friday is also our homecoming game against Albemarle High School at 7:00 p.m. CHS is coming off a win this past Friday against Rocktown, while AHS is coming off a loss against Riverbend. CHS is 2-1 this season; AHS is 0-3. So...let's bring it!

We want to see the CHS community show up to celebrate our CHS homecoming event!

This weekend will conclude with the CHS Homecoming Dance on Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale this week for students who have completed their packets and had them approved by their administrator.

We have a lot to celebrate this week. Thank you for showing up for our school and supporting Charlottesville City Schools and the Black Knight Nation!

NEW VISITOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AT OUR SCHOOL

As part of our ongoing commitment to campus safety, our district is transitioning to Raptor Technologies for visitor management, replacing our previous Securly system. The Raptor system allows us to keep better track of all guests entering our school while ensuring our campus remains secure. Here is what you need to know when visiting us this year:

What to Expect When You Arrive

When visiting during school hours, check-in is quick and self-guided:

Photo ID: Please bring your government-issued driver’s license or photo ID.
Self-Check-In iPad: You will scan the front and back of your driver's license directly at the front desk iPad kiosk and take a quick photo. (Our front desk staff or admin tech will be right there if you need help or need manual entry!)

Save Time with the Raptor App

You can save time and a few steps by downloading the Raptor Safe App before your visit:

Set up your profile and enter your details in advance.
The app will generate a personal QR code.
When you arrive, simply scan your QR code at the iPad kiosk for a fast check-in!

Pre-Registering for School Events

For special school events, assemblies, or classroom visits, we will send out a pre-registration link ahead of time. Registering online beforehand will help check-ins run a lot more efficiently.

Quarter 1 Overview + Family Conferences

Quarter 1 Timeline

The end of Quarter 1 is Monday, October 12
Friday, October 2 is Family/Teacher Conference Day (no school for students).
Teachers have been reaching out to schedule appointments for Friday or alternate times. Similar to previous Family Conference dates, I’ve directed teachers to prioritize meetings with families of students who are at risk (grades of D or lower) or who are struggling with engagement.
Any family or student who wants to meet with their teacher is encouraged to contact the teacher directly via email or ParentSquare.

Discuss school dollars over dinner: RSVP to the Cville Schools Budget Bistro

On Wednesday, September 23, Charlottesville City Schools will welcome members of the community to the Budget Bistro, a communal dinner to discuss school dollars and share ideas on how the division should allot resources.

The Budget Bistro will take place from 6-7:30pm at Charlottesville Middle School (1000 Cherry Avenue, Charlottesville). Guests will enjoy a complimentary meal featuring an appetizer, main course, and dessert while selecting from a "menu" of budget options to support local students and schools. Our school is partnering with the Charlottesville City Schools Family And Community Engagement (FACE) Team for a district-wide Snack Drive running from Tuesday, September 1st through Friday, October 2nd.

Having access to daily snacks helps ensure our students stay energized, focused, and ready to learn. If you would like to support, there are two easy ways to donate:

Off and Away: Phones and Confiscations

Off & Away

Student personal devices must be Off and Away during the school day: 9am - 4pm.
Confiscated phones are turned into the main office.
CHS Office Staff will ParentSquare/message families if phones are confiscated
Confiscated phones may only be picked up by an approved family member and will not be provided back to students.
