A Note from Dr. Malone

Black Knights -

This past Friday, CHS experienced a significant disruption to our sense of safety and our family conference routines. A bomb threat was called to the school, was thoroughly analyzed by Charlottesville Police Department, and no threat was discovered.

Why this event happened? Why CHS? Why Friday? I am unsure.

I am relieved no threat was discovered. I am grateful for the assured, steady, and comprehensive responsiveness from CPD including our own SRO, Sgt. Arreguin. Sgt. Arreguin's understanding of our school building, his relationships with our staff, and his calm disposition were all integral in helping keep a stressful event from escalating.

Our school staff's preparation and responsiveness to our emergency evacuation protocols was stellar and helped lead present community members in the building to a safe location. Once there, even under stressful conditions, our community connection and sense of purpose was evident.

The Black Knight Nation took care of one another.

Many of our teachers have already reached out to their families to reschedule conferences. You should expect to hear from your student's teachers soon.

In the meantime, please reach out via ParentSquare to your student's teachers with any questions. Please also support your student with speaking directly with their teachers about their progress, what they need to be successful, and to seek affirmation on areas of success.

Lastly, I want to assure our community that CHS's primary responsibility will always be the safety of our students, our staff, and our community. We will also remain intrepid in our commitment to fostering meaningful learning experiences and innovating on the school experience for all students. CHS prepares and practices for the types of events we experienced Friday and we will not let this destabilize our purpose nor will we normalize turmoil.

CHS Onward.

We are the Black Knight Nation.

Technology Updates and Resources

GChat - Student Use

Technology has noted significant security concerns regarding Google Chat's ability to capture and retain conversations and chats between students. After reviewing how this app could be supported for students, Technology deemed it a violation of policy and federal regulations because the law requires us to monitor and filter such chats. Technology will continue to work with Google to find a solution that meets our policies and regulations. In the meantime, please use Gmail for communication when needed.
