Black Knights –
As our 1st quarter concluded this past week, I want to share an update on our attendance profile to date.
First, I want to remind families that report cards were shared via ParentSquare last week so please reach out if there are any questions. The student and parent portals to PowerSchool are now completely accessible and remain the best platform to see Year 1 grades and grades for all assignments.
Questions or discussions about your student's grade or progress should start with your student's teacher. If additional help is needed, please connect with your student's school counselor.
CHS Attendance ~ Quarter 1
The two images above are graphs related to our year to date CHS attendance profile.
The top image shows the average grade and pass rate by attendance rate. This data point reflects all students across all courses. A key takeaway indicates a very clear association between course success and attendance. This trend carries over when we further disaggregate the data by student groups, specific content areas, and course levels (Honors, AP, DE. etc).
Teachers are the most influential factors in student success but even the best teacher's impact is limited if students are not present.
At CHS - students who show up will find success in all courses at all levels.
First things first, we must show up.
The second image highlights trends across cohorts (grade levels). Congratulations to our Freshmen class who lead the Average Daily Attendance rate with 95% (our goal is to have an ADA of 95% or better). More impressively, 75% of our Freshmen have Exemplary attendance (less than 5% absentee rate).
We are planning ways to celebrate the Freshmen cohort and individual students for their Exemplary attendance.
As a school, our overall ADA is closer to 93%. A good but less than expected attendance rate.
Attendance and engagement are our shared responsibility which is why I share it with our community. Dr. Gurley reminds us: what we face together, we can change together.
For all families, please continue to do your best to make showing up a priority. Showing up = school success.
Lastly, I want to assure our community that CHS knows that some of our families and students need tiered and intensive support. Our staff, including teachers, administrators, school mental health service providers, school social workers, and school counselors remain attentive to aligning our considerable resources to supporting families with this need. Attendance and school engagement are not solely a school responsibility, but a collective effort that thrives on mutual partnership. If your family is navigating challenges that impact getting to school every day, we are here to work alongside you and connect you with the resources to help.
We are always the Black Knight Nation.
