A Note from Dr. Malone

Black Knights –

CHS (and CCS) is closed for students on Monday, 11/2/26, and Tuesday, 11/3/26.

  • Monday is a Professional Learning day for CCS staff.
  • Tuesday is election day and CHS is a voting site.

I do want to celebrate CHS's first Fun Friday from this past week. We had a "fun Friday" on 9/25/26 with our first parade and school-wide assembly but this past Friday's event was special for many reasons. With our Bell Schedule change this school year, we created a time in our day for WIN sessions, WIN stands for What I need and allows dedicated time for students to get support or enrichment tailored-made for their needs. It may be academic intervention, guided instructional practice, time to make up an assignment or test, and in many instances, a time to meet with clubs or other non-curricular groups. Once a month, CHS is committing one Friday toward sessions that are fun, engaging, and based on student and staff interest. This past Friday, these sessions included dance practice, karaoke, chess, sticker making, board games, origami, pumpkin painting, and of course, quiet rooms.

This schedule routine aligns with our school goals of deepening our student experience offerings and with providing time in our school day for opportunities to connect and engage.

Check with your student to see how they spent their day on Friday. We will have several more Fun Fridays (and other Fun days) throughout the school year!

Additional Updates
Please note that the PTO is planning to meet on a different date and time this month due to the Thanksgiving Break. Currently, the PTO plans to meet on Tuesday, November 17th at 6pm prior to the CHS/CMS Orchestra. This time adjustment is to also recruit more voices to our PTO in support of our CHS staff and students and community.

The Future is Us. The Moment is Now.

CHS Updates and Routines

No School Monday and Tuesday 11/2 - 11/3/26

A split schedule displays class times for Monday and Block days, with periods and times listed.

SCHEDULE THIS WEEK:

This week's schedule:

  • 2 M         PL Day
  • 3 T         TEACHER WORKDAY
  • 4 W         S SEL/Sched
  • 5 TH     OB WIN
  • 6 F         EB WIN

Attendance and On-Time Arrival
CHS will continue to prioritize daily attendance and on-time arrival to school and to each class.
To support this expectation, CHS is holding daily hall sweeps to prompt students to be in class on-time. Students tardy to class are expected to attend our After-School Buy Back: our after school tutoring time where students can work independently, work with teachers, and make-up time lost due to tardiness or absenteeism.

  • After-School Buy Back is every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4pm-5pm in the library. Starting immediately.
  • CHS has a 5pm Bus for students who need transportation
  • 3 Hours of Buy-Back Time = 1 School Full Day

This means students can earn back a full day's absence by attending 3 after-school buy back days.

Any student is welcome to the Tutoring and Buy-Back time.
The words COMMUNITY, HONESTY, and STRIVING are displayed in bold black text with the first letters highlighted in orange.

CORE VALUES

The key refrain that CHS will affirm again and again—for staff and for students—is simple:
  • Show up
  • Give your best
  • Ask for help
  • Be good and kind to others

Our Core Values—Community, Honesty, and Striving—are interwoven into our daily routines, our instructional planning, and our school-wide expectations. They are simple traits that remind us we are at our best when we work together to become something better and when we do so with integrity.

Community Support and Engagement

Early Voting Available Through Oct. 31, Election Day is Nov. 3

This fall, the City of Charlottesville will vote on a 1% local sales tax to fund school construction.
A YES vote could mean an estimated $12 million in annual revenue exclusively for school capital projects.
A NO vote would mean capital projects must be funded through existing revenue sources or delayed until alternative funding is secured.
For more information about possible projects the revenue could support, visit charlottesvilleschools.org/facilities
